Springfield International Charter School girl’s basketball wins Division 5 state championship

LOWELL, Mass. (WWLP) – Some exciting news for a local sports team in western Massachusetts.

The Springfield International Charter School Girl’s Basketball team won the Division 5 state championship Saturday night.

The state championships were held in Lowell on Saturday and the girls were able to secure the title by beating Millis High School 42 to 32. And, on Thursday the team got to celebrate the historic win in their hometown of Springfield.

Mayor Domenic Sarno welcomed the team to City Hall Thursday to congratulate them for winning the State Division Five Championship, their first in the school’s history. The mayor issued a proclamation to accompany their trophy.

The team’s head coach, Tyrone Reid told 22News how important this win is,” Anytime you get to come down here and celebrate a championship, it’s an honor, so we’re excited. It’s been a great year and it’s a great way to wrap it up.”

As Mayor Sarno told the coach and his championship team, their hard work on the court and in the classroom has really paid off.
