Two Springfield men who may have stabbed one another were taken to separate Springfield hospitals in an incident on the city's east side Sunday morning.

It occurred in the driveway of a residence in the 1900 block of South 16th Street, said Springfield Police Lt. Scott Ligon.

Police were summoned just before 10 a.m. Sunday.

There, police encountered a 26-year-old male who had been stabbed in the head and back, Ligon told The State Journal-Register. The person originally was identified with life-threatening injuries, but he is now in stable condition at HSHS St. John's Hospital, Ligon said.

As of Tuesday morning, he remains hospitalized.

While the police were tending to the person on 16th Street, a call came into dispatch regarding a 29-year-old male from the 1900 block of East Pine Street who also had stab wounds.

Ligon said the report didn't verify where on the body that person was stabbed. He was treated at Springfield Memorial Hospital and later released. He is now in the custody of the Sangamon County Jail.

A 28-year-old female who was with the subject on Pine Street was treated at Memorial for non-life-threatening injuries. The nature of her injuries wasn't disclosed.

All three subjects were transported to hospitals by ambulances.

No identities were given by police.

Other witnesses also have been interviewed about the incident.

The "working theory," Ligon said, is that it was an incident between the two men.

The investigation is ongoing, he said.
