It’s been in business for 91 years, but Madison Furniture Company on Springfield’s east side is set to close.
The closing comes as current owner, Court Dickason is planning on retiring. Dickason’s grandparents, Charles and Ruth Madison founded the store, located at 1104 South Grand Avenue East in 1932. Dickason’s mother, Janet became the store’s manager in 1967 and operated the business until Court returned from the service.
While a final closing date hasn’t been set, Dickason tells the Springfield Business Journal that it will depend on how long it takes to sell the remaining inventory. Merchandise has been discounted and the store is open by appointment-only.
Dickason mentioned that the building is set to be sold to The Springfield Project, an organization which is leading redevelopment of the ‘South Town’ area, and supports plans set out by executive director Dominic Watson.

Just last year, the Springfield City Council allocated over $179,000 from a Community Development Block Grant to allow The Springfield Project to buy the former beauty supply store on the corner of 11th and South Grand Avenue East – which is now home to the social innovation center for minority entrepreneurs, known as Community Access Project (CAP) 1908.
