Horace Mann is converting some of the outdoor landscaping at its Springfield headquarters to what it describes as a “one of a kind natural ecosystem,” which will be both more attractive and environmentally friendly.

Knob Hill Landscape Company in Springfield is the designer of the new wetland, which uses natural filters, rather than chemicals, to keep the water clean and oxygenated.
More than 500 tons of boulders are being used to create the pond, next to a patio made of rock layers that will naturally filter rainwater and runoff to make the water clear and safe for animals.

Knob Hill began work on the project back in November and expects to complete it in April.
