Springfield is on its way to building three new firehouses. Aldermen on Tuesday approved an ordinance to spend more than $20 million on the three new stations – at 11th and Ash, Lawrence Avenue and Rickard Road, and on Spaulding Orchard Road.

At Tuesday’s meeting, aldermen also approved a scaled-back proposal for new trash and recycling receptacles downtown. Aldermen balked at the idea originally, because of an initial $250,000 price tag, but the city found a cheaper alternative at less than half that price.

Even so, Aldermen Roy Williams, Jr. and Shawn Gregory voted against the purchase, saying it was wrong for the Council to spend money on trash cans when aldermen rejected funding for broadband access or a summer youth program.
