SPOONER — The Spooner Golf Club is now open for the season, and they are encouraging women to sign up for the Ladies League on Tuesdays this summer.

The club welcomes female golfers of all skills and handicap levels to participate in the league, which begins on May 14. Board Vice President Darlene Von Arx said the league has been picking up again after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the league offers nine- and 18-hole play options, with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. each Tuesday throughout the summer.

“It’s really a new, social way for women,” Von Arx said.

Participants may sign up week by week up until the opening scramble on June 4 and are not required to golf in every event. Participants also do not have to be Spooner Golf Club members.

Von Arx said the Spooner Golf Club Ladies League has women from all over playing, from as far as Minong, Hayward and Webb Lake.

Participants do not need an established handicap, as the league will give them an overstated handicap. There are discounted green fees on Tuesdays for league members, and there is a one-time fee to play nine or 18 holes. The nine-hole league starts after the 18-hole league and players can bounce between the two. There are weekly prizes and a lunch special after every play.

New this year, Von Arx came up with the idea of a Kick the Tires Event, which will be on Tuesday, May 21, for those who may be new to the sport or who have never played. People can learn more about the league by playing nine or 18 holes with members and have questions answered. Or, participants can just stop in and meet people and enjoy camaraderie.

A select team on the league always plays interclub against Hayward Golf Course.

“It’s really gotten to be quite the community,” Von Arx said.

Pro Fred Friedman is running a clinic of four lessons for women this summer in chipping, putting, irons and drivers. He will also be doing a morning class and afternoon class for those who are retired or still working.

To sign up for the league or just the Kick the Tires Event, call the pro shop at 715.635.3580 by Friday, May 10.
