Firefighters investigating North Spokane house fire, police seeking suspect

SPD detectives have developed probable cause to arrest 36-year-old Jenny K. Barden for first-degree arson.

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — One person is in critical condition after a house fire in North Spokane on Thursday morning.

At this time, SPD Major Crimes detectives have developed probable cause to arrest 36-year-old Jenny K. Barden for first-degree arson. Police say her whereabouts are currently unknown.

Barden is facing one count of first-degree attempted murder, six counts of first-degree assault and one count of first-degree arson.

Barden is described as a white woman, approximately 5'2'' and 120 pounds. Police say her alleged criminal conduct makes her a danger to the public.

Anyone with knowledge of Barden's whereabouts should call 911 immediately, reference incident 2023-20054303. Anyone with other information pertaining to this case should contact Detective Downing at wdowning@spokanepolice.org.

According to the Spokane Fire Department Tour Commander, a house caught fire in the Garland District on North Wall Street at around 8:30 a.m. 

Spokane Police Department (SPD) said in a press release that information indicates an occupant was trapped inside the dwelling and that the fire may have been intentional.

When firefighters arrived at the Garland District neighborhood, they found the house on fire and started rescue operations. They were able to rescue an adult who was inside the home. 

A resident told KREM 2 the fire started and spread quickly.

The rescued person suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, and his condition is unknown. No firefighters nor more residents got injured. 

Spokane Police Major Crimes Unit (MCU) detectives, along with fire investigators from SFD are currently investigating the cause of the fire. They said the cause and circumstances surrounding the fire have not been definitively concluded.

North Wall Street, from Garland to Walton, is closed as officers are on the scene investigating.
