Motorcyclist dead after collision on U.S. 221

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Sunday afternoon.

According to highway patrol, the crash occurred around 1:40 p.m. Sunday, on U.S. 221, nearly four miles north of the City of Spartanburg.

A 2005 Suzuki motorcycle was traveling north on U.S. 221, while a 2023 GMC SUV was heading east on Davis Trading Post Road.

As the SUV turned left onto the highway, the motorcycle hit the car.

The driver of the SUV was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for their injuries.

The motorcyclist was also taken to Spartanburg Regional, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the man that died as Charlton Scott Connell, 55, of Spartanburg.

Connell died around 5:42 p.m. in the operating room.

“We ask that you keep the family of Mr. Connell  In your thoughts and prayers during their time of loss and grief,” the coroner’s office said. “We will follow through with a forensic exam on Monday.”
