SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP) – A 17-year-old died at a J-Day dirt bike racing event in Southwick on Sunday.
Southwick selects finalists for Police Chief position On Sunday, Noah DuPont was killed after crashing at the J-Day Off Road competition at the Wick 338 motocross track in Southwick.
Sgt. Thomas Krutka of the Southwick Police Department described Dupont’s death as a freak accident, “Riders crash on a regular basis, it’s part of racing unfortunately. This was just one of those incidents where it was a really freak accident, he hit it in a particular way and he sustained some serious injuries.”
EMS crews that were present on the course responded immediately, rushing the teen to Baystate Noble Hospital but he did not survive.
The extreme portion of the J-Day Off Road competition is broken up into sections with a variety of obstacles like telephone poles and tires, and trees. According to Southwick Police Department, DuPont lost control of his bike in the wooded portion of the race.
The news of this tragic death reverberating across the New England family of riders, many sharing photos and describing Noah as a devoted competitor who’s enthusiasm for racing was infectious.
A GoFundMe page described Noah as a “devoted competitor in the J-Day and other local series. The J-Day community deeply mourns this loss, as does the entire New England family of riders.”
Ethan Broatch, owner of J-Day Off Road and Lisa Lange, DuPont’s aunt, have both set up GoFundMe pages to help the family cover medical and funeral expenses during this difficult time, raising tens of thousand dollars combined.
