Herald-Tribune midseason football player, coach awards and rankings
With half of the high school football season finished, it's time to look at player, coach and team standings. Here are the Herald-Tribune's midseason football awards. Watch Florida HS football games live on NFHS Network Stats and team records are through Sept. 18 . MIDSEASON CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Dorien Jones, Venice Jones — a three-star senior running back committed to FIU — has 590 yards and 14 touchdowns on 81 carries, averaging 118 yards per game and 7.3 yards per carry through midseason. In Week 1, Jones had five touchdowns and 170 yards behind 20 carries in Venice's 42-34 overtime win against Rabun Gap (Georgia) , scoring both the overtime touchdown that gave Venice the lead and the two-point conversion. Against Lakeland in Week 3, Venice escaped in double overtime with a 32-25 win. He had 27 carries for 250 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Again, Jones not only scored the touchdown to give Venice the lead, but he also muscled in the 2-point try. Jones has been invaluable this season for a Venice squad working to make Florida's first-ever Open Division, an eight-team bracket made up of the top teams regardless of class.
