ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — The South Glens Falls softball team has handled its business yet again this season in the Foothills Council, posting a 12-1 league record. But rather than coast into the Class AA sectional tournament, which begins next week, head coach Doni Dickinson dialed up the competition for her team over the final week of the regular season.

The Bulldogs are in the midst of a three-game road trip with all Suburban Council foes that spans just four days. They picked up an impressive win in the second leg of the journey Thursday, taking down state-ranked Class AAA power Colonie, 6-4.

South Glens Falls got right to work, loading the bases in the top of the first inning. Junior second baseman Autumn Roberts pushed across a run with an RBI fielder’s choice, putting the Bulldogs on the board first.

The Raiders responded in the bottom half of the inning, as senior first baseman Ava Sillings – on Senior Day – slashed a two-run single to right field, giving Colonie a 2-1 edge.

The Bulldog bats re-ignited in the second inning. After a Marley Brogan sacrifice fly tied the game at two, Jade Maille untied it with a towering, two-run home run to straightaway center field, putting the visitors back in the driver’s seat at 4-2.

Colonie starting pitcher Lauren Cosselman and reliever Adrianna Laraway locked down in the circle from there, though, tossing a combined four straight scoreless innings. During that time, the Raiders’ offense managed to level the score with a bases-loaded walk to Sillings in the third inning, and a Katie Parisi solo shot on the first pitch of the sixth.

But South Glens Falls broke out of its scoreless streak in the seventh frame with a huge, two-out rally. Jessica Beames got the train moving with a double to left field. Sophia Ring came in to pinch-run for Beames. The next batter, Roberts, hit a sharp ground ball to short that was mishandled, allowing Ring to come around for the go-ahead run. Senior right fielder Sierra VanDerwarker provided some insurance with a booming, RBI double to left.

Pitching with a 6-4 advantage, Isabelle Ames retired the Raiders in order in the home half of the seventh, locking down the victory. The win went to Beames, who relieved Brogan in the circle following a strong, five-inning, five-strikeout effort from the freshman.

South Glens Falls improves to 14-4, and will wrap up its road trip Saturday at Columbia. Colonie concludes its regular season with a 9-7 overall record.
