The city of South Gate and L.A. County are pooling funds to offer a reward to help solve the murder of a grandfather seven months ago.

Hector Ascencio Sr. and his wife were babysitting their grandchildren on Sept. 16 when there was a knock at the front door. When Ascencio opened the door, he was met by a man who fired one gunshot, fatally striking him in front of his 9-year-old granddaughter.

L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Daniel Vizcarra said investigators haven’t received any viable leads in the killing. The city of South Gate put up $10,000 in reward money, and last month, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors added another $20,000.

“We feel confident that someone has information and we are hopeful that the reward money leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects or suspects involved can help generate movement in this investigation,” South Gate Police Chief Darren Arakawa said.
