The 2023 West Virginia High School Girls State Softball Tournament wrapped up Thursday (May 25) in South Charleston. And among the three state champions was Wahama.
It marked a third straight title for the Class A program...and once again Mikey Lieving was a big reason why.
. . . . .
In the pitching circle, Lieving was again dominant in the championship with St. Marys - a team the White Falcons knew quite well.
"I mean it got harder each time, but I think you know it took everyone on our team to get their win. It was really fun to watch."
Lieving and the White Falcons have been having fun the last three seasons by staying together.
"You know we've been able to do this because we're not worried about stats. Not worried about ourselves. We're worried about each other, that's how we did it."
The soon-to-be Ohio Bobcat said all three titles have brought on a variety of feelings.
"It's different because it's my last one ever. But I've just been so thankful for each one in a different way. Yeah, it's different but the same in terms of it's awesome."
This title was won under first-year head coach Wes Riffle.
"We knew he was in a tough situation coming in as a new coach. It's about the team and each other. I think that's how we won."
After her final high school softball game, Lieving admitted it was hard to get a grip on her emotions.
"They're all over the place, honestly. It's crazy, honestly. I'm just so thankful to have been a part of it."
As this chapter of her young life closes, Lieving will forever have Wahama High School and Lady White Falcon softball in her heart and mind.
"I'll definitely remember the people that I shared it with. I will remember the fans. Everyone was here. It was crazy and it was so fun to be a part of. and I'll remember my teammates. I'll remember exactly what wen on in the game, but I'll remember the girls that were beside me."
And they will definitely remember Mikey Lieving, who for the past three years has been living the dream on the high softball diamond.
