Headlines in History 1949: Brothers of Holy Cross produce milk, fruit, and more on land

What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

April 14, 1905: “To the music of brass bands, shouts of the rooters and general jubilations of the multitudes, the baseball season of 1905 began in eight cities of the American and National leagues this afternoon.” — The South Bend Tribune

April 15, 1916: “Albert F. Osborn, of New York city, handwriting expert; Richard Keen, English tragedian, and the American operatic quartet, of Chicago, will make up the program for the Knife & Fork club at its monthly dinner at the Oliver hotel next Tuesday night. The program is expected to be one of the most enjoyable of the season because of the great variety of instruction and entertainment provided.” — The South Bend Tribune

April 16, 1928: “Citizens of Mishawaka will be given an opportunity to name the new band shell in Battell park it was announced to-day at the regular meeting of the board of works. A name will be selected within the next two weeks and all proposed names must be submitted to the office of Mayor Walter Michael before next Monday morning at 10 o’clock.” — The South Bend Tribune

April 17, 1937: “Burglars entered St. James’ Episcopal church Friday night and escaped with one of its most treasured possessions, a $2,000 golden chalice set with precious stones, which has been in use in the church for 25 years. The chalice was stolen from the church about 18 months ago and later recovered in Kankakee, Ill., when the thief attempted to sell it to a jeweler. Its recovery followed a wave of church robberies which swept the Midwest.” — The South Bend Tribune

April 18, 1949: “St. Joseph’s farm, at Cleveland and Currant roads, is a beehive of activity as the Brothers of Holy Cross produce tons of milk, fruit, and other farm crops on their 1,700 acres of land. The farm had an unusual beginning. When the brothers came to Indiana from France in 1841 to teach, they found that conditions here required more than just teaching. In order to make a living, the brothers took up many varied activities.” — The South Bend Tribune

April 19, 1951: “How long the South Bend-Mishawaka area will be without the city and interurban bus service of Northern Indiana Transit, Inc., is anybody’s guess. No settlement was in sight to-day in the work stoppage that has kept busses off the streets for four days.” — The South Bend Tribune

April 20, 1961: “A petition for rezoning to allow the construction of apartment buildings on a 10-acre tract on York Rd. south of Jackson Rd. was given an unfavorable recommendation Tuesday night by the Area Plan Commission in a marathon Courthouse session.” — The South Bend Tribune
