Studebakers are no longer made in South Bend, but they have major ties here.
And this weekend, you could see dozens of them in St. Joseph County.
If you want a weekend activity that involves a trip down memory lane, the South Bend chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club will have more than 50 cars to see!
"I could see right into the center of it. I was behind a rope, and I got in trouble for it. That's why I remember that," said Ken Fortlander, Studebaker owner.
Fortlander recalls the first time he stood in front of a Studebaker. He was young, and the front of the car looked like a rocket ship.
He has only owned this style of antique car for 2 years, but it's something that brings him a lot of pride.
"I just think they're a cool car. It was made in South Bend right where I live, and I just thought it was a cool car. It's the coolest toy I've ever owned,” said Fortlander.
Walking through the St. Joseph County fairgrounds this weekend, you could expect to see more than 50 Studebakers and other antique cars that you wouldn't typically find elsewhere.
"It's an oddity. It's different. Not everybody owns one. I pull into gas stations, and people walk up to me saying 'I didn't know Studebaker made a truck!'" said Steven Forkner, Studebaker owner.
This event is more than just showing off the cars. It was a show like this where Forkner purchased his car.
"Last year we had the international convention here at the fairgrounds. I had seen a picture of it on one of the vendors tables. I made an offer. They accepted it, and my son and I drove to Pennsylvania and picked it up,” said Forkner.
At an event like this, it's the perfect time for swapping or buying parts, fixing up the car, or chatting with fellow owners.
South Bend is no stranger to Studebakers.
Even though they are no longer produced, you will find no shortage of pride this weekend.
"History is history, and for this area of the country and this area, Studebaker is synonymous with so many folks from so many diverse backgrounds,” said Kirk Philippsen, South Bend Studebaker Drivers Club President.
The show continues at the Saint Joseph County fairgrounds on Saturday.
Admission is $5.
