The South Bend Historic Preservation Commission considered a nomination to St. Joseph County's only publicly-owned assisted-living facility a local historic landmark.
Officials say the threat of closing Portage Manor causes concern for the future of the structure.
Portage Manor is already on the National Register of Historic Places, but landmark status will provide assurance that the building will not be demolished.

County officials are scheduled to vote on whether to close the facility in May.
