Pump station construction coming

Poplar Street Pump Station Construction Kickoff, 6 p.m. Monday. City officials present their plans for construction of a stormwater pump station at 10 Poplar St, next to McGrath Highway and blending with an ArtFarm park and event-space concept. The pump station, underground stormwater storage tank and associated utility improvements will improve stormwater management for approximately 60 percent of the city, increase preparedness for extreme weather events, decrease flooding and help reduce combined sewer overflows, officials say. Work on the long-planned infrastructure upgrade is expected to begin this spring and continue through 2025. Watchable by Zoom videoconferencing.

Fare-free buses considered

City Council Traffic and Parking Committee, 6 p.m. Monday. This committee run by city councilor Beatriz Gomez Mouakad gets an update on an equity study of MBTA bus routes to determine targets for fare-free buses. The City Council originally ordered the Mobility Department to undertake the study in consultation with the MBTA in February 2022. Watchable by videoconferencing.

Responses to gun violence

Community Safety Meeting, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Ward 4 councilor Jesse Clingan, interim police chief Charlie Femino and Racial and Social Justice Department director Denise Molina Capers meet with community members to discuss the Tuesday gunfire incident in Winter Hill and Somerville gun activity in general. The meeting takes place in the Healey School Cafeteria, 5 Meacham St.

Share budget priorities

Budget 101 Listening Session, 7 p.m. Tuesday. The city’s finance staff present a workshop about the annual budget process and how residents can contribute to it. The mayor is seeking public input before presenting her proposed fiscal year 2024 budget in late May. The city is also holding its first-ever Participatory Budgeting process, in which residents 12 and older can propose and vote on ideas for how to spend $1 million to improve Somerville. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their budget priorities. Spanish interpretation will be offered, with other language interpretation available upon request. Regulating home sales

City Council Legislative Matters Committee, 6 p.m. Tuesday. This committee run by city councilor Lance Davis takes up two proposals affecting residential real estate transfers. One proposal would impose a transfer tax of 1 percent of the purchase price for buyers of residential property and 1 percent on sellers if they do not live in the property, with the proceeds going to the Somerville Affordable Housing Trust Fund. The second proposal would give some tenants and tenant associations the right to buy their home when the property is up for sale. Both proposals would require a home rule petition approved by the state Legislature. Watchable by videoconferencing.
