134th anniversary of the Johnstown Flood 

May 31, is the 134th anniversary of the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889. The Johnstown Flood National Memorial park will commemorate the victims of the flood with events throughout the day. The Visitor Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. At 4:07 p.m., park rangers will lay commemorative wreaths on the remains of the dam. This marks the time the floodwaters reached Johnstown. The wreath laying will be broadcast live on the Facebook page. Children's activities take place from 6-8 p.m. in the park picnic area, located off of the South Abutment Road. Beginning at 7 p.m., 2,209 luminaries will be lit to honor the victims of the flood. They line the remains of the South Fork Dam and around the Visitor Center. Each luminary will have the name of a flood victim written on it and will remain lit until 10 p.m. Park grounds will remain open until the conclusion of the luminaries. A shuttle will run between the Visitor Center parking lot and the North Abutment from 7-10 p.m. This takes visitors to the North Abutment to view the luminaries. The North Abutment parking lot will close to vehicles. Luminaries will also be visible from the Visitor Center area. Johnstown Flood National Memorial is free of charge.  Summer development series

To address the challenge and improve quality of care for all school-age children, The Learning Lamp and Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children, aka PennAEYC, launched a  free summer professional development series. The workshops can be accessed virtually by any provider, no matter where they live. The monthly workshops take place from May-August via Zoom. The sessions will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. School-age professionals including child care staff, teachers, program directors and summer camp staff are encouraged to attend. To reserve a spot, visit https://www.thelearninglamp.org/events/. The series will offer an array of strategies to deliver high-quality summer camp sessions for preschool and school-age children. PQAS hours and/or Act 48 credits will be awarded to participants for each completed two-hour session. The monthly online workshop series includes: June 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Positive Guidance for School-Age Learners (K1 and 5 C1). July 20, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. — Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead (K5 C1). Aug. 17, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. — Let’s Get Moving! (K5 C1). These workshops will be led by the following instructors: Lorrie Hall, M.Ed., TA Coach, Community Connections for Children/ELRC 9 and 10. She is a veteran teacher, child care director, school-age specialist, instructor and coach. Karian Wise, M.Ed., Head of School for Early Learning, Carlow University Early Learning Center and Campus Laboratory School. She is a long-time early learning teacher, child care director, apprenticeship mentor and adjunct faculty member. Farmers Market

WalkWorks Wednesdays

The Recreation Economic Committee (REC) of the Cambria Regional Chamber, in partnership with the 1889 Jefferson Center for Population Health, is bringing WalkWorks Wednesdays back to Downtown Johnstown at noon on Wednesdays, through June 21. The walking group will meet near the Cambria County Library, corner of Main and Walnut streets, and will follow a predetermined route. Anyone living, working, or visiting downtown Johnstown is welcome to join this informal walking group. It will provide a great opportunity for participants to get exercise, meet new people and share ideas. Johnstown’s WalkWorks route encompasses 1.8 miles and includes many scenic and historic sites in the city, including the Stone Bridge, the Johnstown Flood Museum, and the Iron to Arts Corridor. There is also a shorter 1-mile option. WalkWorks signs pepper the city streets to keep walkers on the correct route.

Shanksville VBS

Shanksville area churches will hold a combined Vacation Bible School Sunday, from 6-8:40 p.m. June 25-29, at Unity United Church of Christ. The program “Keepers of the Kingdom” will help children learn how to be equipped with the armor of God to stand strong in today’s battle for truth. There will be Bible study, games, craft, music and snacks to engage children ages 3 through fifth grade. Registrations to attend should be made by June 1. Three Rivers jazz

For 50 years, the Three Rivers Saxophone Quartet has been pleasing audiences with classical transcriptions of jazz standards. At 7:30 p.m. June 1, the quartet will be performing at the Grand Halle on Broad Street, Johnstown. The program will consist of classical, popular and jazz music. Some tunes will include a rhythm section. Members of the TRSQ are Marino Galluzzo, soprano saxophone; Mike Jacob, alto saxophone; Steve Ehrin, tenor saxophone; and Warren Yeckel, baritone saxophone. Special guest musicians Deb Weible on drums and Bruce Wallace on string bass will assist the quartet in arrangements of jazz standards. This will be the finale of the Grand Halle’s 2022-2023 Chamber Concert Series. Remembering the 1998 Tornado Outbreak: 25 Years Later

May 31 and June 2 mark the 25th anniversary of the tornadoes that struck southern Somerset County in the spring of 1998. The Meyersdale Public Library will feature a program recalling, through photos and oral history excerpts recorded at the time, this unforgettable weather week in Somerset County. The program will begin at 7 p.m. June 1, at the library. Guests are welcome and encouraged to share their own recollections and stories.

Levitt AMP Cumberland Music Series

The Allegany Arts Council lineup for the 2023 Levitt AMP Cumberland Music Series on the Festival Grounds at Canal Place at 6:30 p.m. each Thursday, from June 1-Aug. 3, launches with a performance by ragtime-fusion act Blair Crimmins & the Hookers. All performances will be family-friendly and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and food and beverages to enjoy the show. Concerts are free. The auction enables the camp to annually provided scholarship money to each camper.

Collect and Earn

The Meyersdale Area High School marching band “Collect and Earn” event will be held June 3-7. The band will be accepting donations of used and unwanted clothing, linens, shoes, purses, toys, tools and household items. Collection bins will be set up outside of the band room doors at Meyersdale school, 1349 Shaw Mines Road, Meyersdale. Goodwill will then pay the band, per pound, for donations. Touchstone’s Annual Open House

Touchstone Center for Crafts, 1049 Wharton Furnace Road, Farmington, annual open house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 brings together artisans, inspiring art exhibitions, live music, captivating demonstrations, hands-on activities and a vibrant community of art lovers. An opportunity to provide visitors to interact with the artisans and community partners from the region. Community partners will be on hand to share resources and answer questions about other fine cultural attractions in the area. The Cambria-Clearfield-Blair County Beekeepers will meet at 11 a.m. June 3, in Cambria County, at the home of Bernie and Anne Svidergol, Ebensburg. This is queen field day. Photo contest

Somerset Parks and Recreation Board 2023 photo contest. The theme is "Explore the Beauty of Somerset County Parks and Trails." All proceeds go toward the construction and maintenance of the trail systems. The photo must be from the Somerset County section of the Great Allegheny Passage, the September 11th National Memorial Trail or Somerset Lake Nature Park. Prizes will go to the top three winners. There will be a People's Choice Award, based on a public Facebook vote from the Facebook page: Somerset County Parks and Recreation. Photos will be uploaded to the Facebook page June 8, and the photo with the most "likes" at 9 a.m. June 16, will win the People's Choice Award. Winners will be announced by June 23. First place prize is $140; second place $125; third place $75 and People's Choice Prize is $50 value. Deadline for submission is June 2. Recovery to Work programs

UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Twin Lakes announces the formation of two "Recovery to Work" classes in both Somerset and Cambria counties beginning in June. The free program is designed to help individuals in recovery find a career, and targets both those interested in rejoining the workforce, and those who currently have a job but want to investigate a new career path. Participants will complete a vocational profile, build a resume, and practice interview skills in conjunction with CareerLink. Boundaries and disclosure will be covered to best assist those in recovery to prepare for the workforce. In addition, certified recovery specialists will assist with a session specifically on common struggles individuals in recovery face. Scholarship opportunities to assist with barriers to employment are also available. The six session classes will run as follows: Somerset — Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 6, from 9-10:30 a.m. at 223 S. Pleasant Ave. Johnstown — Thursdays and Fridays starting Aug. 3, from 10-11:30 a.m. at 132 Walnut St. on the third floor. Wetlands workshop

Do you remember the last time you explored a wetland? Join in at 1 p.m., June 11, at Somerset Lake Nature Park (SLNP) at the Mike Ohler Pavilion near the north end of the lake. Somerset County Conservancy and Somerset Lake Action Committee (SLAC) member Bob Hook will lead a discussion on the benefits of wetlands. Following the program, attendees who wish to go for a guided walk on the lake trail will be able to do so. Binoculars, water, bug repellent, and walking shoes are recommended. Blue Star Event

The Somerset County Military Family Support Group second "Blue Star Event" from noon to 4 p.m. June 10, at the Puddle, 1337 Husband Road, Somerset, honoring active soldiers from Somerset County. CACCC exhibition

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County 2023 June and July exhibition, Shakti, the Power of the Feminine!, an exhibition featuring a mixture of paintings by artist Nalini Bhat. Shakti, the Power of the Feminine! will be hosted in the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery and showcase a wide variety of Nalini’s artistic works. The opening reception for this exhibit will be from 1-3 p.m. June 10. A video tour and artist lecture of the artwork will be available on the Community Arts Center’s YouTube and Facebook pages after the start of the exhibit. Shakti, the Power of the Feminine! will be on display from June 3 through July 28. The Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. India Wonders: A Cultural Art Luncheon will take place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 8. Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses

One of the largest convention organizations in the world has once again chosen Johnstown to host its global three-day event, the 2023 “Exercise Patience”! Convention June 9-11, at the 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial. Some 6,000 conventions will be held worldwide as part of the 2023 “Exercise Patience”! Convention series. From Friday through Sunday, six convention sessions will explore the quality of patience, highlighting its modern-day relevance through Scriptural examples. A live baptism will be performed following the Saturday morning session and a prerecorded drama will be featured in two parts during the Saturday and Sunday afternoon sessions. Summer Block Pawty

Kick off summer at the Summer Block Pawty 2-8 p.m. June 10, at Humane Society of Cambria County, 743 Galleria Drive Extension. Antiques & Collectibles

The Hanna’s Town Antiques & Collectors Market is held the second Sunday of each month, through October. The gate opens at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and the market continues through early afternoon, although some vendors are set up by 1 p.m. Saturday and sell that afternoon. There is parking on site. Future dates for 2023 are June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, and Oct. 8. 100th church anniversary

The Windber Covenant Brethren Church,  500 19th Street, in Windber is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the church building's dedication. A special service will be held at 10:30 a.m. June 11. The Rev. Lee Smith from the Mt. Joy Covenant Brethren Church will be the guest speaker. A covered dish meal will follow the service. The Rev. Joe Brown is the pastor.

Picnic with the Elephants

Food and refreshments, raffles, crafts and games, and tractor tour of the elephant areas are all on the agenda for the Picnic with the Elephants, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 15. Each participant will have the opportunity to be part of a tractor tour around the elephant grazing areas hosted by the International Conservation Center staff. The 2023 Berlin Volunteer Fire Department annual Block Party is June 13-17. Fire department games, bingo, entertainment, eat stand, parade, chicken barbecue and fire department open house all on the schedule.

2023 SummerQuest

The Mary S. Biesecker Public Library 2023 SummerQuest summer learning program. Annual outdoor story times begin 10 a.m. June 13, at the Union Street Playground. The stories are designed for toddlers, preschoolers and students grades K-2 and will be held on June 13, 20 and 27, July 11 and 18. Baby Rhyme Time for children under 2 years old. In case of inclement weather, relocate to the library. The Penn State Master Gardeners of Somerset County Budding Gardeners program gardening workshops for children from grades K-5, Thursdays in June (June 8, 15, 22 and 29) at 10 a.m. at the Biesecker Library. This year, the gardeners will host classes on butterflies, creating a butterfly habitat, container gardening and bees. Space is limited, so sign up as soon as possible. As a participant in the Summer Youth Cafe Program, free lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays from June 13-July 18, along with at the Budding Gardeners events on Thursdays in June, at the Union Street Playground. Lunches are provided by the Summer Food Service Program of the Pittsburgh Food Bank. Sign up in advance so that an appropriate amount of lunches can be prepared. Older children and teens are invited to take part in the Summer Learning program from June 20 through July 25. Grades 3-5 can register at the library and pick up a reading bingo card. Confluence Creative Arts Center

Confluence Creative Arts Center has activities planned for the summer months. Three Chords and Be There! Jam and Folk Sing, 6:30-8:30 p.m. third Thursdays, June 15, July 20, Aug. 17. Bring your voice, your ukulele, your guitar (all acoustic instruments welcome), and your enthusiasm for a foot-tapping evening of singing and playing. Each Jam and Folk Sing will have a theme. If you want, bring along a couple of tunes or songs that you might want to do with the group. June — Love Songs. July — Labor/Work Songs. August — Silly Songs.

Restitution

Community Arts Center of Cambria County Log Artheatre production of Restitution, 7 p.m. June 15-17 and 2 p.m. June 18. A premiere production from local playwright Ryan Locke, The American Old West 1876. A small town has been overtaken by a corrupt mayor and his son. Coincidentally a mysterious gunslinger arrives at the local saloon causing the townsfolk to become suspicious. Ligonier Night Market

The monthly Ligonier Night Market will kick off its 2023 season at 5 p.m. June 15, around The Diamond and along Main Street in historic downtown Ligonier. Established in 2020, the event enables shoppers to buy fresh produce, farm-raised meats, craft-made beverages, and other food products from more than 30 local farmers and food processors. And last year, crafters and artisans joined the Night Market to sell their hand-made goods and products — ranging from unique woodcrafts to original artwork and more. The Ligonier Country Market (LCM) and the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the Night Market, which will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month through September. Books Come Alive — a unique library-based outreach program that takes best loved children's books and turns them into 30-minute musicals designed to reach students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Grain Thief at VOMA

Grain Thief will perform at VOMA June 15, with opener Fiddlin’ Ray Bruckman. Formed in 2015, the group released their debut EP Animal, which showcases their roots in folk, bluegrass, and old time music. Sporting Clays Tournament

Sporting Clays Tournament to benefit Somerset County Mobile Food Bank June 17, at Buffer Creek Sporting Clays, Sipesville, 776 School House Road, Somerset. Wobble trap 8 to 9:15 a.m. Registration 8 a.m. Safety meeting at 9:15 a.m. Clay shoot begins at 9:30 a.m. Registration includes T-shirt, doughnuts and coffee before the shoot, 100 sporting clays, lunch and awards ceremony. Shotgun shells and guns are not included. Prizes will be awarded to the top score for the combined team and also the top men and women shooters. Raffles will also be available. The Somerset County Mobile Food Bank is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that supplies food each month to about 1,500 local families in need. The food bank operates mainly off of donations and grants.

Wings-n-Waves

Wings-n-Waves at the Windber Recreation Park, sponsored by the Windber Municipal Authority. CACCC Cultural India Art Luncheon

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County presents "India Wonders: A Cultural Art Luncheon"from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 8. This event will be filled with art, entertainment, and food from India Garden. This special cultural luncheon will begin with a gallery talk about the displayed works of Nalini Bhat’s "Shakti, the Power of the Feminine!" exhibition; along with traditional Chai Tea, served hot or cold as authentic cultural music from the Terra Pan will be played by Mark Ed. An authentic Indian lunch from India Garden will include chicken tikka masala (boneless chicken cooked and curried in Indian spices), palak paneer (spinach and homemade Indian cubed cheese cooked with aromatic Indian spices), rice, naan bread (bread cooked in clay oven), and jalebies (funnel like shape made out of flour and rice flour) for dessert. In addition, the entertainment of belly dancing and sword dance will take place during lunch.
