Snohomish County and WSU to build ‘world-leading’ sustainable aviation fuel center at Paine Field

EVERETT, Wash. — Snohomish County and Washington State University are working on a new project aimed at creating a greener future for the aviation industry.

On Tuesday, they announced their plans to establish a “world-leading” research and development center for sustainable aviation fuels at Paine Field Airport in Everett.

According to a news release, the center will be the world’s first sustainable aviation fuel repository.

“With our history and resources, Snohomish County is the ideal place for businesses to invest in trailblazing climate change solutions,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers. “This R&D Center for Sustainable Aviation Fuels is a foundational component of our long-term commitment to generate new jobs in environmentally sustainable sectors and help decarbonize aviation.”

The center will also be the only facility to collect, sample, and distribute sustainable fuels at a scale needed for large aircraft and widespread use.

The county and its partners plan to share their research with aviation centers worldwide.
