School districts on Long Island received just shy of $600 million in aid from the New York Lottery last year, according to a new state lottery report.
Sharks will be back off Long Island and NYC beaches
Sharks will be back in waters off Long Island and New York City this summer season. Shark Expert Greg Metzger with The South Fork Natural History Museum says the shark forecast is the same as it has been the last few years. The expectation is the same number of sharks and same species will be back near the beaches. This comes after a handful of people were bitten last season. However, Metzger says swimmers should not be afraid to go into the water.

Skies clear in time for Setauket Memorial Day Parade and wreath laying ceremony
Despite the threat of rain, the Setauket Memorial Day Parade went on as planned on Monday, May 27. Hosted by Veterans of Foreign War Post 3054, the event began with a wreath-laying ceremony on the Village Green. After the ceremony, veterans, volunteer firefighters, elected officials, the Ward Melville marching band, Scouts, dancers, twirlers and more marched up Main Street to Route 25A, where hundreds of participants lined the street.
Flower Power exhibit opens at the Mills Pond Gallery
Art is in full bloom at the Smithtown Township Arts Council’s Mills Pond Gallery in St. James with its latest exhibit, Flower Power. The unique show, which runs from June 1 to 29, flows through four gallery rooms and the center hall gallery on the first floor of the historic 1838 Greek Revival mansion.
