Other driver identified in recent Frederick County crash was from Washington County

A Smithsburg resident was among the fatalities last Thursday after a head-on crash on U.S. 40 east of the Washington County/Frederick County line, according to Maryland State Police.

Shawn Patrick Whalen, 56, of Smithsburg, was the driver of the 2019 Ford F-150 pickup truck in the crash that occurred Thursday afternoon west of Easterday Road and Myersville, according to a state police news release. Whalen's identity was released by state police on Tuesday after being identified.

The other driver who was declared deceased at the scene by emergency medical services personnel was Spencer Maurais, 28, of Stewartstown, N.H., state police wrote in an email. Maurais was driving a 2017 Nissan Sentra sedan.

Troopers from the Frederick, Md., barrack responded at 2:53 p.m. Thursday to the area for a report of a crash with entrapment and fire, the news release states.

According to the preliminary investigation, state police investigators believe the Nissan was heading east on U.S. 40 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed into the westbound lanes, the release states.

The sedan crashed head-on with the westbound pickup truck, state police said.

The pickup truck was "fully engulfed in fire" and the driver was extracted, the release states.

That stretch of U.S. 40, also known as the Baltimore National Pike, was closed for five hours after the crash.

State police said they continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
