SMITH MILLS, Ky. (WEHT) — The Smith Mills Fire Department hosted a party on Saturday for the responders who helped rescue a man from a grain bin last month.

Firefighters handed out plaques and certificates and served refreshments to show their appreciation.

Firefighters said the rescue, which happened in March, was a team effort.

Several departments came to help and spent several hours working to get the man out safely.

“The national statistics, if you look online, only 49 percent of grain bin rescues are successful,” said Assistant Chief Bryan Coghill.

“None of our guys, when they signed up, signed up for the praise. But it feels good that you know that that gentleman will be at the next family event. You know, Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays.”

We’re told crews were able to save the man in less than 2 hours.
