Westwood student elected state FFA vice president

SLOAN, Iowa (KCAU) – Westwood High senior Colton Pepin was named the Northwest State Vice President for the Iowa FFA association last week, a dream Pepin has had since starting FFA five years ago.

“I saw the FFA officers for the first time my freshman year when I went to the convention and you kind of just look at that and you kind of picture yourself doing that one day,” said Pepin.

For the first time ever, a student from the Westwood chapter has been elected as the Northwest Vice President, an honor Pepin does not take lightly.

“We’ve never had anyone that wants to step up and take that type of leadership role, so my main goal is to represent where I came from,” said Pepin.

From starting as an eighth grader, Pepin’s growth into an officer role has been evident.

“It’s been an honor to watch the development process from the little eighth grader he once was to the very professional, very mature senior that he has become,” said Westwood FFA advisor Tanner Thompson.

Throughout the school year, Pepin has proved that he has what it takes to serve as the state Vice President of the Northwest.

“How he interacts with those in our chapter and throughout the entire district this year, it’s been really fun to watch him lead others through that process,” said Thompson.

As the first for Westwood, Pepin hopes to inspire other students to pursue state officer positions.

“We have a bunch of members that are super qualified to be in that spot and I think we just had to take the extra step and the extra motivation to get there,” said Pepin. “I’m glad I get to be the pioneer to some of the things we get to do in this chapter.”

Pepin will serve his term as vice president while he attends Iowa State University in the fall.
