Woman dies in custody at Minnehaha County Jail, foul play not suspected, warden says

A 41-year-old woman was found unresponsive in her cell at about 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon during a routine cell check at the Minnehaha County Jail, according to to a news release from Warden Mike Mattson.The woman, a Minnesota resident, was lodged at the jail at approximately 9:50 a.m. that day for DWI, possession of controlled drug or substance, possession of paraphernalia and ingesting, inhaling substance to become intoxicated, according to the release.

Jail staff, jail medical staff, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and paramedics all responded with life-saving efforts. The Division of Criminal Investigation has been contacted by the Sheriff's Office to review the investigation, however, no foul play is suspected at this time, according to Mattson.

A cause of death has yet to be determined by the county coroner. A name has not yet been released.
