MoCo’s Newest Brewery, Third Hill Brewing Co., to Open This Friday

Third Hill Brewing Co. will open in the former Astro Lab Brewing location at 8216 Georgia Ave in Silver Spring this Friday, June 16. According to Third Hill’s website, “We created Third Hill Brewing Co. as a place to get away, unwind, connect with friends- and make some new ones- all while enjoying some delicious craft beer. All are welcome! We value the diversity of our community that makes our home truly amazing. THBC started out by making beer for our friends; and we intend to keep doing that. Life is full of memories, and the best ones are the ones shared with others. Grab some friends, grab a beer, and make some memories.”

Astro Lab Brewing opened in 2018 and brewed a variety of different beers, such as the Cherry Blossom Donut Sour and the Rock Creek Lager. Full statement on its closing below:
“Astro Lab’s story began 8 years ago. Supported by friends and family, we finally opened in fall 2018. Over the next 4½ years, Astro Lab would become far more than just a business. Our staff turned into family. The taproom transformed into a gathering place for regulars, Lab Rats and Run Club. We felt the warmth of community, both within Silver Spring and across the DMV’s brewing scene. So, it is with heavy hearts–but also deep gratitude and optimism for what will follow–that we announce that Astro Lab will be closing at the end of May.

Was this an easy decision? Yeah nah, as Matt would say. As with a lot of businesses, the pandemic kicked us in the butt. Astro Lab has been sustained by the love of patrons, bars, and retailers–and we’ll eternally be grateful for that–but our long-term vision was challenged by new economic realities, and our plans for expansion perpetually pushed to another day. The past year has been a labor of love. Matt has produced our beer mostly alone. Emma has pretty much lived in the taproom. We’ve made it work–with a lot of help and understanding. Meanwhile, we’ve been exploring many avenues to continue, as Astro Lab or otherwise. Ultimately, we met Jason Sliter on his search for a space to launch @thirdhillbrewing . It felt like the right fit. As tough as this is, we’re happy knowing that 8216 Georgia Ave. will continue to be a home for new beers. We can’t wait to try them.

But, we still have 3 more weeks of Astro Lab. Let’s have some fun. Let’s celebrate the memories we’ve made. We’ll open regular hours. We’ll continue serving the freshest Fresh As. Kid Fresh Pale Ale is on the way, as well as our final brew, named Astro Lab. We want to end on a high note–and hope to do it with you.
After that, Emma will take the summer off to spend time with her family. Matt will continue to apply his creativity in the brewing industry and is excited about new opportunities that await. We’re also exploring options for our staff to retain employment at Third Hill, so you may see some familiar faces when that beer project opens.
Thank you for investing your time and friendship with us. We’re so proud of what we did together. It’s been a blast.”
