Construction Worker’s Mistake Leads to $50K Scratch-Off Win

BALTIMORE, MD- A man from Montgomery County recently shared with lottery officials how his usual precision surprisingly played no role in his incredible stroke of luck. While purchasing a scratch-off ticket a few weeks ago, a minor oversight resulted in a life-changing $50,000 windfall for his family.

Hailing from Silver Spring, this fortunate resident works in the construction industry, where precision is paramount in tasks such as building bridges and overpasses. Reflecting on his occupation, he explained, “We have to be precise in our work.” However, it was during his lunch break in mid-May at Metro Coffee Convenience in Rockville that his usually sharp skills seemed to elude him temporarily.

Recounting the incident, he stated, “It was a Friday, and I always get a ticket every weekend.” As he contemplated which scratch game to play, a simple mistake led to an unexpected outcome. He continued, “When I figured out which scratch game to play, I pressed that ticket on the screen, but it was the wrong one. I pressed the one next to it, the wrong ticket.”

Little did he know that this seemingly insignificant error would turn out to be the best purchase he had ever made. Shortly after, he retreated to his car to scratch off his “wrong” instant ticket—the $20 $50,000 Cash game. To his astonishment, he couldn’t believe his eyes when he discovered the prize. Overwhelmed with disbelief, he thought, “This can’t be true.”

The $50,000 Cash scratch-off made its debut in late December and stood out due to the 160 top prizes it offered. With this recent win, there are now 107 top prizes remaining. Additionally, there are 118 second-tier prizes worth $5,000 that have yet to be claimed. Metro Coffee Convenience, located at 202 Park Road in Rockville, had the honor of selling this top-prize winning instant ticket, and as a result, the Montgomery County business will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
