Moisture Eases Wildfire Concern
Over the past decade, the regular March meeting of the Sierra County Commission has consistently included a resolution establishing burning restrictions, as springtime winds began drying out the region’s already parched forests and grasslands. While such commission action has become regularly anticipated, precipitation delivered to Sierra County and throughout the Southwest since last summer, along with future forecasts, have significantly changed the outlook for 2023.
Turtleback Classic; A Pleasant Challenge
Disc golf professionals and aficionados from at least seven states converged on the Truth or Consequences Municipal Golf Course for two full days of competition in the second annual Turtleback Classic Disc Golf tournament Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 12. A total of 77 competitors participated in the tournament, which warm temperatures, blue skies and less wind than might be anticipated in Sierra County at this time of the year. Although last year’s inaugural tournament attracted more players, comments from those who participated and/or came out to observe the competition were overwhelmingly positive. Statements offered during the event and online comments about the Turtleback Classic praised the tournament organizers, T-or-C’s unique, challenging and picturesque course, as well as the city’s hot springs, Sierra County’s many other attractive amenities and the cheerful welcome community members afforded all participants.
Community Schools Program: Addressing The Needs Of Our Students
The youth in Sierra County face many challenges and barriers. The county has the highest rates in the state of youth living in poverty, as well as the second highest rates of adults living in poverty1. With a lack of available and affordable housing, more and more families are experiencing homelessness.
BLOCKBUSTER HITS
T-or-C and Sierra County were Blockbuster hits at the recent Santa Fe Film Festival and Film week (actually 10 days) in Santa Fe. For the first time, five projects made the roster for the highly selective film festival and our own Burt Ferguson showcased his prodigious talents at the New Mexico Film and Television Hall of Fame where he was inducted as a “Rising Star".

Sharing A Night Out Together
