It was a busy Saturday at Shippensburg University, as the Pennsylvania track and field season concluded with Day 2 of the PIAA Track and Field Championships.
Some huge moments happened on the girls side locally, with Cumberland Valley avenging 2022′s heartbreak, Trinity’s Adeline Woodward bouncing back from a slow start to her postseason, State College’s relay team getting going without a key coach, and the final races of star runners Jill Sydnor, Maddy Brooks and Soleil Morrison.
Here’s a rundown of some of the other biggest Mid-Penn results in the girls events.
Kiser doubles up
Chambersburg senior Camy Kiser picked up her first-ever state medal on Friday morning at Shippensburg while setting a program record in the 1600.
So she decided to simply repeat the act on Saturday morning.
In the first event of the day, Kiser placed sixth in the 3A 3200-meter race, concluding her final season in high school before she heads off to Pitt with another Chambersburg record, running a time of 10:29.99.
“It was more kind of it was hitting me on my warm-up and after my race,” Kiser said about it being her last event as a Trojan. “I’m just excited so it’s more like an excited feeling. I’m ready to go off to college and see what I can do.”
Jackson seeing three
Ericka Jackson is no stranger to states, having earned three 3A medals a season ago in the three throwing events.
But while the Harrisburg senior did that again in 2023, she improved her placing in two of them and set two PRs in the process, following up a shotput bronze Friday with a bronze in the discus and javelin on Saturday, throwing a 145-5 and 137-1, respectively.
The two performances gave the Saginaw Valley State commit three bronze medals on the year after earning just one third in discus a season ago.
“I definitely am proud of [my career],” Jackson said. “It paid off a lot. And it put me in a good position numbers-wise for college. Yeah. So I’m pretty happy.”
Wechsler adds two more
While Susquenita senior Samantha Wechsler wasn’t so sure she’d be standing in the middle of a podium at states for the long jump, Saturday’s two events were big ones for the Blackhawks’ star.
Wechsler didn’t disappoint, earning two more bronze medals in the 2A 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump, giving her four medals for her high school career.
She took third in the former with a 15.34, then improved from seventh a year ago in the triple jump to third Saturday with a top leap of 37-7, ending her high school career.
“It’s really sad,” Wechsler said. “Thursday, I actually graduated, and it wasn’t very emotional because I still had this. It almost feels like you’re not done yet.”
“But I think after a triple jump, it’ll definitely hit that that was the last time ever competing for this school.”
