Discovering new things and ideas are the joy of being a historian.

Even more fun can be had by weaving those things and ideas into a story or presentation to be shared with the community. This is such an example, when I was able to share something with a family, and get new songs for our House Band, “Folks” to sing.

This is my letter to the family:

“Hi from June Reynolds and the Sherwood Historical Society. As we were finishing up our History Workshop in January, one of our neighbors came in with a songbook. She had been told to get all the “junk” out of the Rebekah’s Lodge! (Little do these people know that the Lodge is built on “junk” but OH WELL…)

“Anyway, she brought us this songbook labeled Mrs. L.W. Murdock, 940 South Pine Street Sherwood, Oregon 97240. It is very old and contains old western music like Jimmie Rogers and a local Sherwood man, Marvin Holcombe. I have photocopied the Holcombe songs to give to the family.

“I am sure they have these but, I thought it was cool to have another copy from another place. I still sing and play guitar, and may try to learn some of these, however Marvin’s will be hard. There are some chords mentioned but I would not have the melody.

“There are many other favorites which I do recognize and would enjoy singing. If anyone would want to see this songbook, it will be placed in the archives of the Morback House Museum in an undisclosed place, as I fear it would be deemed as “junk” and be thrown out. However, if anyone wants to see it, I could provide the songbook for your perusal. Maybe Clyde List and I will learn some of the songs for Car Show!!!!

    “Sincerely, June Reynolds”

Since January, I have learned “San Antonio Rose” by my all-time favorite, Bob Wills, and the Hank Williams song, “There’ll Be no Teardrops Tonight.”

Someone wrote in the margins of the song, “Bob Cat Boogie”: “This song I played for guys in Korea. It made a big hit in the clubs over there.” This is called “an intro” to the song.

In other Historical Society news, we are getting ready for Pioneer Days 2024! We kick off on May 15 with the Charter School and Home Schoolers. Then we host our Newberg neighbors from Crater Elementary, followed by Hawk’s View and St. Francis, Middleton, Archer Glen and Tigard’s Metzger Elementary students.

Our Doll Exhibit will still be up. After that, will be car show. We are open 1-4 p.m. every Friday and Saturday.
