SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — The Shelbyville Police Department is commending one of their officers after he helped save a driver from a burning car.

According to an SPD release sent Tuesday, Officer Devin Moore was en route to an off-duty assignment at a school on Feb. 20 when he drove by a serious car crash on Interstate 74 near the 121-mile marker.

The crash, which was investigated by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, reportedly involved a car veering off the roadway, crashing into a tree and subsequently catching fire.

SPD said that, upon seeing the crash, Moore took “swift and courageous” action to help those involved in the crash.

“In the face of danger, Officer Moore exhibited quick thinking and selfless bravery that were truly remarkable,” SPD said. “Witnessing a crash and subsequent vehicle fire is a harrowing experience, yet his commitment to assist those in need speaks volumes about his character and professionalism while placing his life in peril for others.”

The department said the officer was able to pull over and help remove both the passenger and the driver from the car mere moments before it became fully engulfed in flames. To watch the rescue, click the video below:

“The Shelbyville Police Department expresses its deepest remorse for the victim(s) of the accident and their families,” SPD said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

The department said that Moore’s actions are a “testament to the dedication and valor” exhibited by SPD officers. They added that he was “deeply appreciated.”

“On behalf of the City of Shelbyville and the Shelbyville Police Department, I would like to express our gratitude for Officer Moore’s unwavering commitment to public safety,” said SPD Chief Bill Dwenger. “His bravery and selflessness undoubtedly made a profound difference in the lives of those involved in the accident, and his actions reflect great credit upon himself and the law enforcement profession as a whole.”

No other information was immediately released by SPD regarding Moore’s actions. However, the department said it anticipates that they may release more information in the future.
