Grandview Medical Center has submitted an application to the State Health Planning and Development Agency (SHPDA), proposing a new freestanding emergency department in Shelby County.
According to a release from the state agency, the proposed medical building would operate as an extension of Grandview Medical Center located on Highway 280. The proposal is now under consideration.
The proposal says the new ER would be located in Hoover near the Valleydale Road exit of Interstate 65. The proposed address is 2137 Valleydale Road. The cost of the proposed project is just over $25 million.
Kim Hafner is a Hoover resident. The proposed location next to the Circle K, is less than 10 miles from her home. She welcomes the growth of the Birmingham-Metro area.
"When I moved out here, this Valleydale Road, was the country," said Hafner. "The more care we have the better. It's all been downtown for so long."
While Hafner said it would may mean more traffic in the area, she knows the importance of emergency care being there when you need it.
"Being a nurse I know what needs to be addressed more severely. Alot times with a smaller ER setting, you're in and out," said Hafner.
The SHPDA will put the proposal to the Certificate of Need Review Board. The board is also opening up to public comment.
Interested parties who want to submit written statements or speak before the board must do so by July 17. People must also submit a copy of any written statements to Holly S. Hosford, Esq., Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, One Federal Place at 1819 5th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203.
The application number is AL2023-21.
