Sheboygan County experienced strong performance from the tourism sector in 2022 according to data released on Tuesday by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. The results were part of a statewide report that, according to WDT Secretary Anne Sayers, detailed a record-breaking year for Wisconsin’s tourism industry. The data, which quantified tourism’s economic impact, revealed $23.7 billion in total economic impact from a combination of direct visitor spending, employment within the sector, total labor income, and state and local taxes, increasing 13% compared with the previous year.
Sheboygan County saw a $439 million impact last year, a 12.8% increase over 2021. Direct visitor spending totaled $264.9 million, increasing 15.6% over the previous year. 3,349 jobs were either directly or indirectly supported by visitor activities (including part-time and seasonal work), and total labor income in Sheboygan County from tourism amounted to $108.9 million, up 13.5% from 2021. Sheboygan County tourism activity also generated $31 million in state and local taxes in 2022, 9.1% more than the previous year.
Sheboygan County topped all surrounding counties in total economic impact ($439M), with Washington County a distant second at $284 million. Fond du Lac County saw the largest increase by percentage in total impact year-over-year with an increase of 13.7%, while Washington County also topped Sheboygan County’s gain at 12.9%.
