George Kambosos vs Maxi Hughes

In a battle of lightweight contenders, George Kambosos Jr. will seek to prove his elite-level status, while Maxi Hughes once again looks to overcome the odds at the Firelake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Kambosos, 29, is fresh off a pair of disappointing 12-round unanimous decision losses to undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney. Both of those bouts took place in Australia, but home advantage wasn’t enough for Kambosos, who struggled to impose his physical strength and determination on the quicker and more skilled fighter.

“Having fought the best lightweight boxers in the world, I now know I have become an even better fighter and have added further artillery and weapons to my overall fight game,” said Kambosos.

“Maxi Hughes is a good boxer, a tough Englishman, and I’m sure he will try his best, but I know and he knows that his best will not be enough. Hughes is not elite, and when you have been in there with elite boxers like I have, you pick up on the mistakes in a boxer like Hughes.”

Up until early 2021, Hughes was considered a domestic-level fighter on the British scene. However, a convincing triumph over Mexican hitter Jovanni Straffon took the Yorkshire-based lefty’s career to the next level. Subsequent wins over Ryan Walsh (UD 12) and former featherweight champ Kid Galahad (MD 12) have further bolstered Hughes’ reputation.

“I’m excited to realise my dream of fighting in the USA and to showcase my skills to a new audience,” Hughes said. “I’ll do what’s necessary to get the win.”
