Bakersfield football stays unbeaten after downing Tulare Union
TULARE — The Tulare Union High School football team lost 49-27 to undefeated Bakersfield on Sept. 18 in a non-league game at Bob Mathias Stadium. Here are three takeaways from the game. Bakersfield is one of the Central Section's best teams Unbeaten Bakersfield (4-0) is loaded. And if the Drillers can continue to run the ball downhill as they did against Tulare Union, they'll be hard to contain the rest of the season. Bakersfield found the end zone almost immediately. Junior running back Damir Lomax busted loose for a 43-yard touchdown on just the game's third offensive play from scrimmage. That gave the Drillers a quick 7-0 lead after Jack K'Miller's extra-point kick. Lomax is one of the Central Section's elite playmakers this season. He scored four total touchdowns, also reaching the end zone on 10- and 13-yard runs. He punctuated his outstanding outing versus Tulare Union with a 96-yard kickoff return in the third quarter. Lomax — who has scholarship offers from Oregon State, Idaho, and UNLV — ran for a game-high 168 yards on just 14 carries. He averaged 12 yards a carry. Bakersfield rushed for 301 yards as a team on 21 attempts, averaging nearly 10 yards
