SHADY SPRING- The Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers suffered a ‘closer than the score indicated’ 7-2 loss to the Shady Spring Tigers on Monday, April 22.

West trailed just 4-2 in the sixth inning, but in the bottom half, the Tigers pushed across three runs that broke the game open and ultimately decided the outcome.

The Cavs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Preslee Treadway reached on an error and Julia Herndon followed with a single. Four batters later, and with the bases loaded, Lacey Walker laid down a bunt single that scored Treadway. However, the damage stopped there as Shady pitcher Raegan Lane struck out Brooke Patterson to keep the damage at a minimum.

Then, Shady (8-4) answered in the bottom half of the second.

Avary Bragg singled, Annabelle Sturgill and Brooklynn Blankenship walked, then Lacy Osborne ripped an RBI base hit to tie the game at 1-all. An error in the West outfield on the next Tiger hitter allowed two runs to score and at the end of the second frame, Shady Spring led 3-1.

But the Cavs refused to lay down and lose any momentum. Three consecutive singles from Maddie Fields, Brilee Redden, and Treadway loaded the bases again. Herndon then hit a sac fly, but also again, Lane pitched out of the jam by retiring the next two hitters harmlessly, and Shady clung to a 3-2 lead.

An RBI single from Jenna Joyce extended the Tigers lead to 4-2 in the fourth, then the Cavs (14-7) went down 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth, all via strikeouts, and at that point, Shady Spring felt they were in the driver’s seat. Sturgill had a 2-run single in the sixth that made the score 7-2 and Lane retired the Cavs in order again in the seventh to end the game and it gave Shady the victory.

Redden pitched a solid game for Greenbrier West. She went six innings, gave up five hits and seven runs (just two earned), and struck out 10.

Herndon and Walker were both 1-3 with an RBI apiece. Fields and Treadway each scored one run.

Bragg led Shady with two hits and Sturgill was 1-1 with two RBIs and she also drew three walks.

Joyce got the win for the Tigers in relief as she went four innings, allowed just one hit, and had seven strikeouts.

The Cavs will hit the road again on Wednesday, April 24 to face the Nicholas County Lady Grizzlies.
