AND UNPRECEDENTED DEMAND FOR PASSPORTS NOW CREATING A GROWING BACKLOG AND PUTTING LOTS OF TRAVEL PLANS IN LIMBO. NOTHING WORKS ACCORDING THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE’S WEBSITE PASSPORT PROCESS, WHICH USUALLY TAKES A FEW WEEKS. WILL NOW TAKE 10 TO 13 WEEKS. IF YOU PAY AN EXTRA DOLLARS FOR IT TO COME FASTER, IT’LL TAKE 7 TO 9 WEEKS. WE’RE NOW WAITING FOR OUR ONE OF OUR FAMILY MEMBERS TO GET THEIR PASSPORT. WE’RE BEYOND 12. WILSHERE’S SON, HIS PASSPORT IN THE MAIL. A LITTLE OVER TEN WEEKS AFTER APPLYING. MORE THAN 12 WEEKS LATER, HIS OTHER RELATIVE IS STILL WAITING AND HAS A FAMILY TRIP PLANNED TO EUROPE NEXT WEEK. THERE ARE DAYS AWAY FROM THE TRIP DEPARTING WITH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON THE LINE FOR FOR TRAVEL COSTS. FLORIDA CONGRESSMAN MAXWELL FROST SAYS UNFORTUNATE. THE COSTS ARE NOT REFUNDABLE. A nationwide, unprecedented demand for passports is creating a growing backlog and is putting travel plans in limbo.A man in Seminole County says his relative has been waiting for more than 10 weeks to get her passport renewed. They have a scheduled flight to catch to Europe next week and now they're worried they're going to lose thousands of dollars. "Last night, we spent three and a half hours on the phone waiting to talk to somebody," Olivier Welscher, a Seminole County resident, said. Welscher says his family has been getting the runaround while trying to figure out when their passports would arrive.On March 1, he mailed in paperwork for his son and another relative since they were due for renewal. "We've been told that 'Oh, it's now being printed and in 24 hours we'll see a status update.' Nothing works," Welscher said. According to the Department of State's website, passport processing, which usually takes a few weeks, will now take 10 to 13 weeks.If you pay an extra $60 for it to come faster, it'll take seven to nine weeks. "We're now waiting for one of our family members to get their passport and we're beyond 12 (weeks)," Welscher said. Welscher's son received his passport in the mail a little over 10 weeks after applying. More than 12 weeks later, his other relative is still waiting and has a family trip planned to Europe next week. "They're days away from the trip departing with thousands of dollars on the line for travel costs," Welscher said. Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost said, unfortunately, the costs are not refundable."Look at your passports now and make sure that it hasn't already expired or is it going to expire soon," Frost said. Just like Welscher did, Frost encourages people to reach out to their local reps. "Obviously, we can't guarantee anything but our constituents service advocates back at home are ready to help and serve and help you get through that bureaucracy," Frost said.
