Seattle Police: Driver killed after running red light and hitting tree

The driver of a car was killed Friday afternoon after she tried to beat a red light, she lost control of her car and struck a tree, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Just after 4:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a single-car collision in the 2300 block of South Judkins Street.

When they arrived, officers found a 57-year-old woman, the only person in the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witnesses, the woman appeared to try a beat a traffic signal that was about to turn red, when she overcorrected, which caused her car to leave the road and hit a tree.

Southbound traffic was shut down while investigators worked the scene.
