Seahawks Ex Al Woods Taking Free Agency Visits with Jets, Browns

Unsurprisingly, for a guy who's been one of the more consistently available and underrated players at his position over the past decade, former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Al Woods is already receiving interest from teams in need.

The Seattle Seahawks cut veteran defensive tackle Al Woods on March 20, ending his second stint with the team in an attempt to revamp the defensive line.

But unsurprisingly, for a guy who's been one of the more consistently available and underrated players at his position over the past decade, he's already receiving interest from teams in need.

Woods is set to take free agency visits with the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, per reports Monday from NFL Network.

Should Woods sign with a new squad, it would mark the seventh different team he's been a part of since being a fourth-round selection by the New Orleans Saints out of LSU in 2010, though the Saints released him prior to the start of his rookie season.

Since then, Woods has played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts and, of course, the Seahawks.

While Woods hasn't quite reached a Pro Bowl level of play in his career (only nine sacks in 12 years) he's never played fewer than 12 games in a season since 2012. Talk about consistency.

But Seahawks general manager John Schneider admitted that Woods' release was simply due to financial reasons.

“Al’s situation was really cash and cap,” Schneider said recently on Seattle Sports. “Everybody has a cash budget in the NFL that you need to work within, and every team is probably slightly different. Although it may show if you go to like websites or whatever and say, ‘Hey, where are the Seahawks with their salary cap?’ there’s a lot of budgeted items that fall into that as well when you talk about incentives, premium roster bonuses, injuries.”

Whichever team lands Woods will be getting a consistent veteran on the defensive line, something any roster can never have too many of.
