Sparkling Cider, Martinelli’s Gold Medal, Watsonville
Just 16 years after the state of California was founded, the city of Watsonville in southern Santa Cruz County was created — and so was a certain apple cider brand. In 1868, a Swiss immigrant named Stephen Martinelli started fermenting apples into cider at his brother’s farm in the agricultural community, and S. Martinelli & Company was born. Today, the fourth generation runs Martinelli’s, a name that is so synonymous with the genre that many people simply refer to any sparkling cider as “Martinelli’s.”
