Review: Carrie Mae Weems: “Something Grander Still” at Art Galleries at Black Studies, UT Austin
Something Grander Still finds artist and curator engaged in the same critical gesture: a deliberate return. Importantly not a retrospective, the exhibition demonstrates how early work can remain generative when revisited with care and curiosity. In bringing Carrie Mae Weems’ Family Pictures and Stories” back into focus, Dr. Ariel Evans, Contemporary Art Research Fellow in African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, lays the conceptual groundwork for the exhibition’s larger proposition: that early work, when engaged anew, becomes a catalyst for expanded research, deeper historical contextualization, and renewed creative inquiry. What emerges is not simply a looking back, but an invitation to consider how formative material continues to shape — and be shaped by — ongoing questions and evolving artistic and scholarly practices.
