5 dead between the ages of 8 and 17 in Westchester parkway crash

SCARSDALE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Five children from Connecticut were killed and a sixth was injured in a car crash on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale early Sunday morning, according to Westchester officials.

A 16-year-old boy was driving a Nissan Rogue on the parkway just north of the Mamaroneck Road exit around 12:20 a.m. when the car veered off the road, hit a tree and caught fire, authorities said.

Five children between the ages of eight and 17 years old were killed in the crash, and a nine-year-old boy who was sitting in the hatchback cargo area managed to climb out the back of the car.

The lone survivor was taken to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Westchester County Police Accident Investigation Team is investigating the cause and details of the incident.

Police are withholding identification of the victims pending notification of family members.
