A motorcyclist was seriously injured after leading Georgia State Patrol on a high-speed chase reaching 172 miles per hour and eventually crashing their bike.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, a trooper was on a traffic stop on I-16 Westbound in Chatham County at around 12:19 a.m. on Saturday when they saw a motorcycle following an SPD patrol extremely close.
The trooper then cleared up from his traffic stop and caught up to the motorcycle, seeing that it was driving 70 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. The trooper attempted to stop the motorcycle, but the driver looked back and accelerated rapidly, initiating a pursuit.
According to GSP, the driver fled in a "reckless manner," weaving in and out of traffic and reaching 156 miles per hour. The pursuit continued westbound until the motorcyclist merged onto I-95 northbound, reaching speeds of 172 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone.
The motorcyclist then exited onto Pooler Parkway and struck the concrete median with the front tire of the motorcycle, completely ejecting the driver from the bike and flipping the motorcycle end over end.
GSP reported that the driver came to a rest in the media on Airways Avenue with the motorcycle next to him. He was taken to Memorial Medical Center with serious injuries.
