Baseball Players To Play in HBCU All Star Game

ATLANTA, Ga.- Four members of the Savannah State baseball team have been selected to participate in the 2023 HBCU All-Star game. The game is set to take place June 3 at Coolray Field, the home of the Gwinnett Stripers, the Triple A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, with the first pitch being thrown a 7:30 p.m.

Representing Savannah State will be pitchers Enrico Peele and Jose Santiago, outfielder Joseph Smith and infielder Champion Robbins.
 
The 3rd Annual HBCU All-Star Game will feature talent from the top 50 Historically Black College & Universities from Division I, Division II, NAIA and Junior College levels. This event will include an exciting HBCU Homecoming Tailgate, Vendors, Food Trucks, Entertainment and a Pre-Game Home Run Derby.
 
Peele and Robbins will be on team Ralph Garr while Santiago and Smith will play for Team Andre Dawson. Peele, Santiago and Smith played in the 2022 HBCU All-Star Game.
 
The Tiger quartet helped SSU to a 33-14 record during the 2023 season which included a berth in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game and an invitation to participate in the Black College World Series.
 
Peele posted a 12-2 win/loss record with a 2.96 earned run average. In 76 innings pitched, he surrendered 71 hits, 30 runs, 25 earned runs, 29 walks and three home runs while striking out 66 batters.
 
The 6-foot-2 red-shirt senior from Lehigh Acres, Florida was named the SIAC Starting Pitcher of the Year, named to the All-SIAC First Team and was named to the Black College Nines' Small School Elite Team as a First Team pitcher.
 
Santiago had a 6-3 record and a 3.18 ERA. The Webber International transfer pitched 76.1 innings and gave up 80 hits, 44 runs, 27 earned runs, 20 walks and two home runs while striking out 53 batters.

A red-shirt junior from North Lauderdale, Florida, the 6-foot, 170-pound Santiago was named to the All-SIAC Second Team this season.
 
Smith finished the 2023 season with a .404 batting average. He also had 62 hits, 55 runs, 11 doubles, seven triples, six home runs and 50 RBI. Smith also had a .516 on base percentage, .663 slugging percentage and stole 25 bases.
 
The 6-foot, 177-lb. Brunswick, Georgia native has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-South Region Second Team, SIAC First Team and the Black College Nines First Team.
 
Robbins, a red-shirt junior from Conyers, Georgia, played in 40 games for the Tigers. The 6-1, 180-lb. second baseman had a .319 batting average, .425 slugging percentage and a .847 on base percentage. He scored 40 runs, hits six doubles, four triples, drove in 33 runs and stole 12 bases in 12 attempts.
 
Garr is a former professional baseball player, scout, and coach. Nicknamed "Road Runner", he played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder from 1968 through 1980 with  the Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox and California Angels. In 1974 he was named a National League All-Star and won the National League batting title.
 
Dawson is a former professional baseball player. Nicknamed "The Hawk", Dawson played with four teams during his 21-year professional career which lasted from 1976-96. He played with the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins. An eight-time National League All Star, Dawson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
 
Garr played college baseball at Grambling State while Dawson played his collegiate baseball at Florida A&M.
