The remains of Quinton Simon, the toddler whose body was found in a landfill after he went missing last fall, have been returned to Georgia as his mother faces multiple charges stemming from his death, police said.
Quinton, 20 months, was first reported missing from his family’s Savannah home by his mother, Leilani Simon, on Oct. 5.
His partial remains were found in a landfill six weeks later. The body was brought back to Georgia this week, WJCL reported, after undergoing additional testing at the FBI lab in Quantico.
Leilani Simon, 23, is currently facing 19 criminal counts, including a felony murder charge, related to her son’s death.
She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment last week, and was denied bond, WJCL said.
During the proceedings, Leilani’s defense argued that she should be granted bond in order to reunite with her surviving 9-month-old daughter and 4-year-old son, WSB-TV explained.
Judge Tammy Stokes, however, ultimately ruled that the young mother remained a flight risk.
As of Wednesday afternoon, it is unclear if Quinton’s remains will be released, and if they will be claimed by the family.
