National City workshop invites residents to reimagine 57 acres of abandoned freeway
Civic leaders in National City and Southeast San Diego have been working with residents this summer to reimagine 57 acres of land that were once planned for a freeway. An unusually long Interstate-805 offramp bisecting the Southcrest neighborhood is all that remains of Highway 252, a project the state began planning in the 1960s but abandoned in the 1980s amid neighborhood opposition.

San Diego’s Bike Ridership Is Evolving, Not Declining. Here’s What SANDAG’s 2025 Commute Report Really Tells Us
Every year, I look forward to the San Diego Association of Government’s (SANDAG’s) State of the Commute report, mostly to see what’s happening with biking in San Diego. One number jumps out: the report states that bike activity is down 5% from 2024. But the report also has some good news, the region now has 1,881 centerline miles of bikeways, with more than 331 miles added since 2016. The report lays out five classes of bikeways that are in-use in the SANDAG region, ranging from multi-use paths to bike boulevards, each designed to make riding more accessible for different skill levels.

SANDAG: Fixing La Mesa Boulevard trolley traffic would cost half a billion
After months of study, SANDAG presented possible ways to untangle a traffic snarl at one of the La Mesa’s busiest intersections — Spring Street and La Mesa Boulevard — but without a path to implement those expensive solutions. The proposed solutions, which include elevating trolley tracks or...
