Four area teams — two baseball and two softball — to play for state regional championships

From staff reports

After no local high school baseball or softball team captured a CIF-Southern Section title this spring, four teams will have a chance to win a CIF State Southern California regional championship after earning victories Thursday.

The Westlake and Calabasas baseball teams and the Oaks Christian and Santa Paula softball teams all advanced to regional finals by prevailing in semifinal games.

Westlake scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning and right fielder Mac McKinley threw out the potential tying run at the plate to end the game as the fifth-seeded Warriors defeated top-seeded San Marcos 4-3 on the road to reach the Division III championship game.

Nate Franco, Nate Johnson, Kaden Youmans and Will Kaczynski each drove in a run with a hit in the four-run fifth. Westlake will play at second-seeded Bakersfield Christian on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Will Stubbington had a double and two RBIs, Simon Hoffman had a hit and two RBIs, Phoenix Call drove in a run, and Peter Lynch allowed two runs on two hits in five innings as sixth-seeded Calabasas defeated third-seeded South Hills on the road to reach the Division II title game.

The Coyotes will play at fourth-seeded Santana on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Anahi Arreola finished 4 for 4 with a solo home run and three RBIs, Rylee McCoy was 2 for 3 with a solo homer, Terrianna Kelley went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, Ilove’a Brittingham was 2 for 4 with a double, and Emelia Davis pitched a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts to lead second-seeded Oaks Christian to an 8-0 win over third-seeded Rancho Bernardo in a Division 1 softball semifinal game at home.

The Lions, who beat Eastvale-Roosevelt 6-5 to win the Division 1 regional title last season, will play at top-seeded Poway on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Liliana Arana allowed one earned run while striking out 15 in a complete-game effort and was 2 for 3 with two RBIs at the plate, Mia Cardenas went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and KaiLea Reyes finished 2 for 3 to lead top-seeded Santa Paula to a 5-2 victory over fifth-seeded Imperial in a Division IV semifinal game at home.

The Cardinals, who had a first-round bye, will host Holtville on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Fillmore baseball team, which reached the CIF-SS Division 7 final, lost to top-seeded Castaic 9-1 on the road in a Division V semifinal game.
