Even though compliance with seat belt laws in Illinois stands at around 93%, Sangamon County deputies found more than a few offenders during an extended Memorial Day traffic safety campaign.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which ran from May 19 through the May 30, produced 21 citations in Sangamon County for failure to wear seat belts.

Deputies on the detail also wrote 17 tickets for speeding and nine for distracted driving, and made one arrest on an outstanding warrant.

The campaign is funded by federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
