List of inmates kept in Sangamon County Jail continues to grow despite mental health issues and judicial rulings

There are now four inmates in the Sangamon County Jail who have been found mentally unfit to stand trial, yet remain in county custody more than 60 days after that determination.

Two more inmates passed that 60-day threshold this week. A recent change in state law now gives the Illinois Department of Human Services 60 days to transfer such inmates to a suitable psychiatric facility, but also allows the department to evade that deadline if it certifies that it lacks adequate bed space; one of the four has now been in the county jail for 90 days since being found unfit.

There’s no indication yet when any of the four may be transferred.
