Sangamon County is proceeding with plans for a new homeless shelter in its building just off of South Dirksen Parkway, despite ongoing concerns from nearby residents.

The county is taking steps to renovate the building and finalize an agreement with Helping Hands to operate the shelter.

Newschannel 20 reports the moves come despite requests from those living near the facility to postpone action.

The residents say they are concerned about safety issues in the neighborhood if there’s an influx of homeless people or addicts seeking help at the shelter.
