Sangamon County sits in abnormally dry conditions – and forecasters are concerned about drought

Abnormally dry conditions have hit Sangamon County, as forecasters raise concerns the state could soon find itself in the middle of a drought.

The latest drought monitor lists eastern Sangamon County as abnormally dry, the least severe of five categories of drought. Portions of Adams and Pike County are listed in the “moderate” drought category.

But experts say predicted warm temperatures and lower-than-average rainfall could quickly intensify drought conditions and create real problems for farmers in the weeks ahead.
